What To Do in Hong Kong
Known as the “Pearl of the Orient”, Hong Kong is a vibrant city that seamlessly blends modern skyscrapers with centuries-old traditions.
Being that it’s surrounded by lush green mountains and the South China Sea, this bustling city offers a unique mix of world-class cuisine, cultural landmarks, and breathtaking landscapes.
While many visitors are here for a quick layover, you’ll be surprised just how much there is to do in Hong Kong!
So, we break down the best things to do in Hong Kong by region: Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong Island, and Lantau Island.
😉 Numbers 12 and 6 are my favourites – and #1 is a regret 🫣
Kowloon Peninsula
15. Avenue of the Stars
You should think of this as Hong Kong’s version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This scenic waterfront promenade stretches along Victoria Harbour, offering breathtaking views of Hong Kong’s skyline.
It features handprints, signatures, and statues of legendary Hong Kong film stars, including Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee.
Even if you aren’t a bit cinema fan, the promenade makes the perfect backdrop for a morning coffee walk!
We started the morning here with a picnic from Bakehouse (worth it!!) and spent some time people-watching and admiring the epic Hong Kong skyline – highly recommend it!!
14. Bruce Lee Statue
Though you could argue this is a part of Avenue of the Stars, we think this is iconic enough to deserve its own spot on this list!
The lifelike bronze statue captures Bruce Lee in one of his signature poses, symbolizing his strength, discipline, and contribution to martial arts and cinema. A must-visit for action movie fans and anyone who appreciates Hong Kong’s rich film history!
13. Cup Noodles Museum
Entry: HK 60+ | Hours: Closed Wednesdays | 11:15 am – 7:15 pm
So, this is one thing we wish we did but was out of the budget (there is always next time!)
It’s a fun and interactive museum dedicated to the history of Cup Noodles. Not only can learn about the invention of instant noodles but you can design your own custom Cup Noodles!
It’s a quirky and enjoyable stop, especially for noodle lovers and families!
12. Dukling Cruise
Price: HK 150-290 | Booking: Available 30 days in advance
After a massive day of exploring Hong Kong, we went on a sunset cruise and it was the perfect way to cap off an amazing day!
The Dukling is one of the last remaining traditional wooden junks, offering a nostalgic glimpse into Hong Kong’s maritime heritage.
Whether you choose a daytime or evening cruise, the views are stunning. Watching the sunset from the water was super romantic and this might even be my favourite thing we did in Hong Kong!
11. Symphony of Lights
Price: Free | Time: Daily at 8 pm
Symphony of the Lights is a light and laser show that illuminates Hong Kong’s skyline. This spectacle includes over 40 buildings on both sides of Victoria Harbour, synchronized to music.
To secure the best viewing spots check out Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, Golden Bauhinia Square, or enjoy the show from a ferry cruise.
In light of the fact it’s free, you might want to arrive early to secure a good spot!
10. Kowloon Park
Price: Free | Hours: 5 am – 12 pm
Is there anything better than a beautiful park in the middle of the city? Since this urban oasis offers a quiet escape from the bustling street, it makes for the perfect picnic spot!
It features lush gardens, a bird lake with resident flamingos, a Chinese-style garden, and even a martial arts corner where you might catch a live kung fu demonstration. Great for a relaxing break or a morning stroll!
Best Things to Do on Hong Kong Island
9. Ride the Star Ferry
Price: ~$5 HK | Hours: Runs every 6-15 minutes from 6:30 am – 11:30 pm
Okay, so this one is technically something to do between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula BUT, one of the funest ways to cross Victoria Harbour is via the Start Ferry.
For less than a dollar, you can cross between Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island while enjoying stunning skyline views.
When we were in Hong Kong this was the only way we got back and forth from Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula!
8. Man Mo Temple
Price: Free | Hours: 8 am – 6 pm
Listen, we’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of temples in our travels and it takes a bit for us to be truly surprised by one but Man Mo Temple blew our socks off!
It’s a stunning historical temple filled to the brim with swirling incense and intricate wooden carvings. Coupled with the fact it is dedicated to Man Cheong (God of Literature) and Mo Tai (God of War), this temple showcases amazing red pieces of paper hanging from beautiful wooden banisters.
Not to mention the burning incense coils hanging from the ceiling create a unique mystical atmosphere, making it a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
7. Ding Ding Tram Tour
Price: HK 150 | Duration: 1 hour | Schedule: 3 times daily between 10 am – 5 pm
Now you can’t come to Hong Kong and not ride one of Hong Kong’s iconic double-decker trams but why not upgrade your public transit journey for a nostalgic city tour? These charming trams have been operating since 1904 and get their name from the sound they make!
On this tour, you will not only get a 1-hour long tram tour on one of the oldest trams in the city but you also get two days of unlimited Ding Ding rides!
While the route passes through bustling neighbourhoods, towering skyscrapers, and historic districts, you can enjoy historical facts and information about beautiful Hong Kong!
Want a more budget-friendly experience? Simply catch a ding ding as public transport around Hong Kong Island for just a few dollars
6. Peak Tram & Victoria Peak
Price: HK 80-150 | Hours: 7:30 am – 11 pm
Alright, so we already know that The Dukling Cruise was my favourite thing we did in Hong Kong but honestly, the Peak Tram is a very close second!
As if the journey on this unique funicular wasn’t fun enough once you reach the top you’ll be at Hong Kong’s most famous viewpoint!
We arrived at 7:30 am at the Peak Tram terminal and were pleasantly surprised at the fact we were one of a handful of others on the tram up! While the shops at the top hadn’t yet opened – I’ll take a quiet tram and no shops any day of the week!
By comparison, when we were headed down at 8:30 am the mountain the line to board the Peak Tram had grown looooooong!!
Top Tip: For the best views get the right-hand side going up!
Getting tickets for the Peak Tram is easy, you can buy them online here, in person (but you’ll have to wait in line!) or if you have the Octopus Card you can head straight through!

Best Things to Do on Lantau Island
5. Hong Kong Disneyland
Price: HK 600+ | Hours: 10:30 am – 8:30 pm
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m going to assume I can somewhat speed through this one – we all know about Disneyland right?!
Anyway – in Hong Kong, you can experience the magic of Disney with thrilling rides and themed attractions – this park blends classic Disney charm with Hong Kong’s unique culture.
P.S You can opt for an early entry pass to beat the crowds!
4. Tian Tan Buddha
Hours: 10 am – 5:30 pm
When visiting Tian Tan Buddha you’ll want to arrive early as you’ll need to climb 268 steps to reach the top of one of Hong Kong’s most iconic landmarks.
Towering at 34 meters tall, it’s one of the world’s largest outdoor bronze Buddha statues. The surrounding Po Lin Monastery and lush mountains make this a serene and spiritual visit.
3. Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car
Price: HK 235+ | Hours: 10 am – 6 pm
This is one of the best ways to experience Lantau Island! This cable car ride offers breathtaking panoramic views of the South China Sea, mountains, and the Tian Tan Buddha.
Choose the crystal cabin for a glass-bottom experience!
Best Day Trips from Hong Kong
2. Sai Kung Day Trip
A stunning coastal escape is known for its beaches, rock formations, and seafood.
Take a boat tour to explore the Sai Kung Geopark, relax on Tai Long Wan Beach, or hike the High Island Reservoir East Dam.
It’s a great place to experience Hong Kong’s natural beauty beyond the city skyline.
1. Macao
Just a short ferry or bus ride away from Hong Kong, Macau is an exciting day trip destination that offers a unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese influences.
Known as the “Las Vegas of Asia”, Macao is famous for its extravagant casinos, but there’s much more to explore beyond the bright lights and gaming tables.
Remember when I said I had a regret about our Hong Kong trip? It was not taking the time to schedule a trip to Macao while we were right there!!
⛴️ Getting To Macao From Hong Kong
Without a doubt, the easiest (and funest) way to get to Macau from Hong Kong is by ferry, which takes around one hour. You can also take the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge bus for a quick and affordable option. But, don’t forget your passport, because you’ll need to go through immigration!
A day trip to Macau is a fantastic way to experience a different side of this region. It blends colonial history, delicious food, and exciting entertainment into one unforgettable adventure.
