What is Tiananmen Square?

Tiananmen Square is one of the largest public squares in the world and the site of many significant historical events.

Accordingly, it is located in the heart of Beijing, and has hosted parades, protests, and national celebrations.

The square is surrounded by landmarks like the Forbidden City, Great Hall of the People, and the National Museum of China, making it a must-visit for history buffs and travellers alike.

While Tiananmen Square has been home to many a historical event (1989 Tiananmen Square) this is not a history blog and I feel I cannot write about this moment in history effectively. For more information read here.

When to visit Tiananmen Square?

Being that reservations for Tiananmen Square are divided into four separate time slots, you’ll need to pick the time most suitable for your itinerary:

  1. Flag Raising: Early morning, just after sunrise.
  2. Morning: From 8 AM until noon.
  3. Afternoon: From noon to 4 PM.
  4. Evening: After 4 PM.

These time slots determine when you can enter the area, so plan your visit accordingly. For an unforgettable experience, consider visiting during the flag-raising ceremony at sunrise.

Rules for Visiting:

You’ll need to use a WeChat mini-program to book your tickets. Here’s how:

Where to enter Tiananmen Square

So, now you have your tickets it’s time to figure out where you are going to enter Tiananmen Square.

Given there are multiple entry points to Tiananmen Square. Choosing the right one can save you time and energy.

It is important to note that Beijing has plenty of one-way roads (that includes footpaths), so if you are getting public transport or a DiDi, make sure you are getting off on the correct side.

Entrances:

  • Tiananmen West Red Wall Security Check 01
  • Tiananmen East Red Wall Security Check 02
  • North Security Check 03 on the East Side of the Square
  • Security Check 07 on the South side of the Square
  • South Security check 04 on the East side of the square

The Most Popular Entrance:

The most commonly used entrance is located near the Forbidden City exit. While convenient, this entrance often has the longest lines.

💡 Top Tip: Beijing is full of one-way streets so if you are catching a DiDi or public transport be sure to get dropped off on the correct side of the road.

The Entrance we used:

We entered through a less popular gate located at South security check 04. This entrance had shorter lines, and we got in within 10 minutes!

We went here twice (we got lost and stuck on a one-way path for 20 minutes), but on the positive side at this entrance, we got in, in under 10 minutes.

South Entrance:

Another option is the South Entrance, located at the top of the square. This entrance allows you to walk downhill toward the main attractions. Note that we didn’t use this entrance, so we can’t comment on its wait times.

💡 Top Tip: If you’re not a fan of long lines, consider walking 30–40 minutes or taking public transport to a less crowded entrance
