The Temple of Heaven is one of Beijing’s top tourist attractions! It was built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and was used by the emperors to make offerings to the heavens pray for good harvests.

When Do Temple of Heaven Tickets Become Available?

Tickets for the Temple of Heaven become available for purchase 7 days in advance. It is important to note though that if you book through a third party (hello Get Your Guide! 👋) you may be able to tentatively purchase further in advance, but I’ll explain that later!

For now, before you buy your tickets, you’ll need to know when you can go!

Temple of Heaven Opening Times

Okay, time for my tip that we always say for popular tourist attractions. GET! THERE! EARLY!

If you want to avoid the crowds, heading there first thing in the morning is key. 🔑

  • April to October:
    • Park is open 06:00am – 06:00pm
    • Temples are open 08:00am – 06:00pm
  • November to March:
    • Park is open 6:30am – 09:00pm
    • Temples are open 08:00am – 05:30pm

That being said, we were at the Temple of Heaven mid afternoon and yes, it was extremely busy BUT it didn’t feel too crazy. Being such a grand spread out area meant that we were able to find gaps of groups to stand in and snap photos!

Plus, with magic erase you would think we were there alone! 😍

Planning your Time at the Temple of Heaven

This landmark stretches a whopping 273 hectares!! If like me, that number means very little to you – it means that the Temple of Heaven is about 6 times the size of the Vatican City! 🤯

So, planning your time here is key. You will need around 3-4 hours to properly explore the ground but, if you are happy to skip a couple things, like us, you can get in and out in around 2 hours!

Top Stops in Temple of Heaven

1️⃣ Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿) – The most iconic building! This round, three-tiered temple is where emperors prayed for good harvests.

2️⃣ Imperial Vault of Heaven (皇穹宇) – A smaller temple with a famous echo wall – we tried to test this out but with all the yelling surrounding us we had no chance 🤣

3️⃣ Circular Mound Altar (圜丘坛) – The center of ancient ceremonies, designed with perfect acoustics.

4️⃣ Long Corridor (长廊) – A shaded walkway where locals play cards, do tai chi, and chat – great for people-watching. 👀

5️⃣ The Seven-Star Stones (七星石) – A hidden gem! These large stones represent the seven peaks of Mount Tai, symbolising China’s unity.

If you’re in a rush, we recommend focusing on the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar! Note, that is in order of most important to least!

Temple of Heaven Ticket Options

Okay, we are almost at the good stuff. 😅

So, now you know when you want to go and how to get there. Now it’s time to work out what type of ticket you want to get.

There are different ticket options depending on which areas you want to explore.

The main entrance fee grants access to the park grounds, while additional tickets are required for top attractions like the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and Imperial Vault of Heaven.

How to Buy Temple of Heaven Tickets

There are three main ways to buy tickets for the Temple of Heaven. As self-confessed cheap skates we opted for the slightly more confusing but CHEAPER way of booking through WeChat!

I would recommend booking in advance ensures you secure your spot, especially during peak travel seasons and holidays.

Through a Third Party

If you prefer a hassle-free option, third-party platforms like Get Your Guide allow you to book in English with confirmation saved right to your phone.

If you use Get Your Guide often, downloading their mobile app is a game-changer. It makes booking and retrieving tickets a breeze!

Download the mobile app here

Yes, you will pay a slight premium for convenience, but it’s a hassle-free way to book!

The major benefit of booking tickets this way is that it is a simple-to-use and easy-to-understand booking system- you will however, pay a slight premium for this convenience.

👉 Trip.com has the cheapest third-party tickets availablecheck them out here!

Another benefit is that you may be able to ‘book’ tickets further than 7 days in advance. While these tickets won’t be confirmed you are basically telling the argent that you want them to try and secure a ticket for this date when they become available!

A huge benefit for those early planners – just be sure to set a calendar reminder to make sure it has gone through!

At the Entrance

If you prefer to buy tickets in person, you can do so at the ticket counters near the main gates. However, ticket lines can be long during weekends and holidays, so online booking is the faster option.

To be clear, we do not recommend this way however, if you find yourself with a few extra hours in Beijing and want to try your luck – head to the gates with your fingers crossed!

How To Book Temple of Heaven Tickets Through WeChat

Step 1: Open WeChat & Find the Official Booking

  • Open WeChat (download it if you haven’t yet).
  • Go to ‘Discover’ → ‘Mini Programs.’
  • Click ‘Scan’ and scan the QR code above.
  • Once inside, tap ‘English’ on top right hand corner to enable translation.
  • Agree to terms and conditions.

Step 2: Select Your Ticket Type

  • Park Entrance Ticket only entry to the parklands
  • Through Ticket (includes special attractions)

If you want access to all the scenic spots inside (like Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests), go for the through ticket.

📅 Pro tip: Tickets open 7 days in advance, and weekends/holidays book out quickly – so, set a calendar reminder to book!

Step 3: Fill in Your Passport Info & Pay!

Since you’re a foreigner, you’ll need to:

  • Select “护照” (Passport) instead of ID card.
  • Enter your passport number and full name (match your travel doc exactly).

✅ Double-check everything before you hit confirm – typos can cause headaches at the entrance.

Process your payment – WeChat Pay is the easiest way (if you have it set up).

Step 4: Scan & Enter on Arrival

  • Once paid, you’ll get a QR code in WeChat, I like to take a screenshot to save this to my photos app (juuuuust incase!)
  • At the Temple of Heaven entrance, go to the ticket gate (no need to pick up a paper ticket).
  • Scan your QR code and you’re in! 🎉

Final Thoughts

In summary, securing your Temple of Heaven tickets early will enhance your Beijing experience (and lower those stress levels!!)

We opted to go through the more confusing WeChat method but if I wanted a third-party option I would go with Trip.com because the prices are very similar!

So, now you know exactly how to book your Temple of Heaven tickets! Make sure to secure them early, plan your visit wisely, and don’t forget your passport!
