Where to stay in Hong Kong

Choosing the right area to stay can make or break a trip. Maybe you’re looking for something budget-friendly, or maybe you prefer somewhere with an amazing view. For us, we opted for the TST area and loved how centrally located we were!

So, here is a breakdown of the top recommended neighbourhoods for different travellers:

🤑 Budget Travellers – Mong Kok
🥂 Luxury & Business – Central
🛍️ Shopping & Foodies – Causeway Bay
🥇 Best for First Timers and overall – Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)

For this itinerary, we recommend staying in the TST area, it’s close to major attractions, shopping, and Victoria Harbour views. Also, TST offers easy access to the Star Ferry and MTR.

Hong Kong Itinerary 5 days

With so much to explore, having a structured itinerary ensures you make the most of your time in Hong Kong. So, in this blog, I am going to break down each day into different sections: morning, afternoon, and evening, PLUS, I am going to include some suggestions of where to eat each day!

From cultural landmarks and breathtaking views to world-class shopping and delicious local eats, this jam-packed Hong Kong Itinerary 5 days has it all.

Day 1 – Get Acclimatised

The first day is all about settling in and getting a feeling for the city with its breathtaking skyline and vibrant atmosphere. If you are anything like me, the energy of this vibrant city will hit you in the face as soon as you arrive!

The goal of this first day is to balance leisure and exploration, making it an ideal way to soak in the magic of Hong Kong without feeling overwhelmed.

Not to mention, you’ll be ending the day with one of my favourite things we did in Hong Kong!

Morning: Picnic Breakfast

Breakfast from Bakehouse

⏰ 8 am – 9 pm | 💸 HK$50-$100 | Bakehouse Hong Kong

Bakehouse is a very popular local artisan bakery famous for its handmade sourdough tarts!

Each tart costs HK$12.50 and features a beautifully crisp crust contrasted by a rich and creamy filling. Their tarts are so popular that it is not uncommon for them to sell out within an hour. 🤯

Sadly, when we went, they had already sold out!! Instead, Jordan went for the chocolate hazelnut doughnut (HK$40), this was an incredibly rich cream-filled doughnut that tasted like a Ferrero Rocher!

I pulled one of my favourite tricks when I didn’t know what to order and asked the lovely staff what their favourite was, the answer was? The strawberry vanilla Danish! At HKD 40, this was easily the winner in my books, the rich vanilla cream was offset by the sharpness of the fresh strawberries.

Of course, breakfast wouldn’t be complete without a coffee (HK$40) and, Bakehouse serves up some of the best coffee we have had outside of Australia!

Avenue Of The Stars

⏰ 24/7 | 💸 Free | Avenue of the stars

Take your beautiful blue bag of baked goods to Avenue of the Stars. Here is a scenic waterfront promenade that offers stunning views of Hong Kong’s skyline.

Find a nice place to sit along the promenade and take in the views while you indulge in your breakfast.

Think of Avenue of the Stars as Hong Kong Hollywood Walk of Fame. Here, you will find handprints paying tribute to legendary figures from Hong Kong cinema.

Undeniably, the top attraction here is Bruce Lee’s Statue. Named the star of the century, this statue has become a popular photo spot for movie buffs and kung fu enthusiasts!

Afternoon: Ding Ding Tram Tour

Lunch at Lin Heung Lau

⏰ 6 am – 4 pm 6 pm – 10pm | 💸 HK$100-$300 | Lin Heung Lau Hong Kong

Lin Heung Lau is a beloved historic dim sum house that serves up incredible Cantonese delicacies. Dating back to the 1920s, Lin Heung Lau still operates by serving up dishes by a traditional trolley service!

Now, I’m going to break down how this place works because, to be honest, we were overwhelmed the moment we arrived. 😅

Firstly, when you arrive, you will be taken to your seat (note, this may be a shared table). Here, you will be provided with a delicious tea and a sheet of paper. The paper is used by the staff to note down what you have ordered.

The iconic old-school trolleys will stroll throughout the restaurant, offering up differently delicious foods and mouth-watering freshly made dim sum. As the trolley comes by, you can ask for what you want, or you can go for a wander and see what is on offer!

Once you are full, take your slip of paper to the front desk and settle the bill!

Ding Ding Tram Tour

⏰ 1:45 pm or 3 pm | 💸 HK$150 | Ding Ding Tram Tour

Easily, the best way to experience the heart of Hong Kong Island is aboard the historic Ding Ding Tram.

This charming, double-decker tramway has been operating since 1904 and provides a leisurely ride through the bustling streets of Hong Kong.

A fun fact we learnt is that the tram’s signature green colour originates from an excess of WWII-era military paint supplies!

Note: A front-row seat on the upper deck is recommended for the best views

🚋 How to Ride:

  1. Hop on from one of the tram stops along the route (we recommend starting at Western Market).
  2. Sit on the upper deck for the best views.
  3. Enjoy the slow ride through the city’s most iconic streets!

🔥 Pro Tip: A front-row seat on the upper deck is recommended for the best views!

Evening: Dukling Sunset Cruise

⏰ 5:30 pm or 6:30 pm | 💸 HK$280-HK$320 | Dukling Cruise Hong Kong

End your day with a magical sunset cruise aboard the Dukling, Hong Kong’s last remaining traditional Chinese junk boat. This beautifully restored vessel offers an authentic and intimate way to experience Victoria Harbour, with breathtaking views of the city skyline as it lights up for the evening.

🚢 Why Take the Dukling Cruise?

  • Experience sailing on a 1950s-era junk boat, a rare piece of Hong Kong’s maritime history.
  • Enjoy an unobstructed view of the city’s dazzling skyline from the water.
  • Relax with a complimentary drink as you soak in the views of Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, and Wan Chai.

This was arguably, my favourite thing we did in Hong Kong. There was just something about watching the sunset from the water on a piece of history!

Day 2 – Exploring Hong Kong’s Iconic Sights

Morning: Victoria Peak

Peak Tram to Victoria Peak

⏰ 7:30 am – 11 pm | 💸 HK$136 (Peak Tram + Sky Terrace 428) | Peak Tram & Sky Terrace

Victoria Peak, or simply “The Peak,” is the highest point on Hong Kong Island and offers the most breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline. At the top, there are shops, cafes, restaurants and walking trails to take in the view.

The best way to get there? The historic Peak Tram! Running since 1888, this funicular railway takes you on a steep ride up the mountain, passing between skyscrapers.

🔥 Pro Tip: Sit on the right-hand side for the best views on the way up!

After catching the iconic Peak Tram to Victoria Peak, take a stroll around the top and take in the views of the Hong Kong skyline.

Powered by GetYourGuide
Breakfast on Victoria Peak

Find a cafe or restaurant at the top and enjoy breakfast. Yes, you will be paying some higher prices up here, but let’s be honest, the views are worth it!

We opted for Pacific Cafe – from the windows, you can not only see the iconic Victoria Harbour but you can also see the Peak Tram making its journey.

Sky Terrace 428

⏰ 10 am – 10 pm | 💸 HK$136 (Peak Tram + Sky Terrace 428) | Peak Tram & Sky Terrace

At the top, make your way to Sky Terrace 428, the highest viewing platform in Hong Kong. You’ll get stunning 360-degree views of Victoria Harbour, Kowloon, and beyond!

Afternoon: Man Mo Temple & Hollywood Road

Lunch Honolulu Cafe

⏰ 7 am – 10 pm | 💸 HK$50-$100 | Honolulu Cafe Hong Kong

Honolulu Cafe first opened its doors back in 1940 and has kept its old-school Hong Kong diner style.

You can either grab an egg tart from the service window or sit inside and grab a milk tea with your meal of choice.

I’ll be honest, the food here isn’t going to blow your socks off BUT the experience as a whole is what we are going for. There is something electric about a Cha Chaan Teng (Hong Kong Diner).

Man Mo Temple

⏰ 8 am – 6 pm | 💸 Free | Man Mo Temple

After a morning filled with modern skyscrapers, it’s time to travel back in time to 1847 to one of the oldest temples in Hong Kong. Man Mo Temple, a beautiful and historic site, is a peaceful escape amidst the city’s busy streets!

This temple is dedicated to the gods of literature (Man) and war (Mo), and its incense-filled halls provide an atmosphere that will transport you to another time.

Look, we are a couple of very lucky ducks and have had the pleasure of seeing plenty of temples around the world! And yet, Man Mo Temple was something unique and special.

The combination of smoke billowing from the incense, against the deep red and brown hues and traditional Chinese architecture, is something to behold.

Right outside the temple, take a short stroll down Hollywood Road, known for its antique shops, street art, and trendy cafés. This is a great spot to snap some photos, grab another coffee and pick up a unique souvenir.

Evening: Temple Street Market

Dinner and experience Temple Street Market

⏰ 2 pm – 11 pm | Temple Street Market

Street food at Temple Street Market will provide an authentic taste of Hong Kong and is the perfect way to experience Hong Kong’s vibrant street life.

The market is famed for its bustling stalls offering everything from trinkets to delicious snacks, and it is a must-visit for a more local experience.

Stretching across several blocks, this market is packed with stalls so grab some bits to eat as you stroll along.

There is no better way to end your night at the Temple Street Market than grabbing a soft-serve ice cream from a historic Mister Softee van!

🔥 Pro Tip: While the market opens in the afternoon, it’s best at night when the neon lights start turning on!

Day 3 – Optional Day trip to Macao or Disneyland

Today, you have the option to explore beyond Hong Kong. Whether you’re looking for history and culture in Macau or a fun-filled adventure at Disneyland, this day offers a unique experience outside the city’s main attractions.

Morning: Traditional Hong Kong Breakfast

Breakfast at Ngan Lung Restaurant

⏰ 7 am – 10:30 pm | 💸 HK$50-$100 | Ngan Lung Restaurant Hong Kong

Today going to be a big one so we need a big breakfast to get us through! Ngan Lung is a traditional Hong Kong café.

This is one of those places that you’ll see locals and tourists flowing in and out of all day long.

You can’t go wrong with the traditional Hong Kong Breakfast set of macaroni soup and ham, fried egg and toast.

🔥 Must Try Foods:

  • pineapple buns
  • scrambled eggs
  • Hong Kong-style milk tea

Afternoon: Optional Disneyland or Macau Trip

Option 1: Macau

Macau is known as the Las Vegas of Asia and due to its deep history boasts a unique blend of European and Asian qualities.

  • ⛴️ Ferry to Macau (1 hour) – Take the TurboJet or Cotai Water Jet from Hong Kong.
  • 🗼 Explore Senado Square, a historic plaza with Portuguese-style architecture.
  • 📜 Visit the Ruins of St. Paul’s, one of Macau’s most iconic landmarks.
  • 🎰 Stop by The Venetian Macau, a luxury casino resort with indoor canals.
  • 🤤 Try Macanese cuisine like egg tarts, pork chop buns, and African chicken.
Option 2: Disneyland

The most magical place on earth in Hong Kong.

  • 🏰 Spend the day at Hong Kong Disneyland, enjoying classic rides, themed lands, and the “Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular.
  • 🎢 Must-visit rides: Mystic Manor, Iron Man Experience, and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.

Evening: Dinner at TST

Let’s be honest, no matter which option you went for, today was a huge day! So we are going to keep it easy tonight with a simple and delicious meal.

Dinner at Cheung Hing Kee Shanghai Pan Fried Dumplings

⏰ 9 am – 9 pm | 💸 HK$50-$100 | Cheung Hing Kee Hong Kong

The pan-fried bun is a very popular street food throughout Asia but perfecting the dish is difficult.

Cheung Hing Kee has done just that! These crispy bottom dumplings are filled with flavourful soup and tender meat. My mouth is watering just writing this!

Now, I know I can be a bit optimistic and like to look for the silver linings in things but when I tell you these dumplings are incredibly I truly mean it. I mean, we were in Hong Kong for two full days and went here TWICE! I think that says it all.

🔥 Pro Tip: Be careful when eating as the soup inside is hot!

Day 4 – Exploring Central

Today is all about diving into Hong Kong’s urban energy, from its towering skyscrapers and historic landmarks to its lively street markets. We’ll start in TST and make our way to Central, where the city’s colonial past meets modern development, and end with a spectacular light show at Victoria Harbour.

Morning: Star Ferry to Central

Breakfast Australia Dairy Co

⏰ 7:30 am – 10 pm (closed Thursdays) | 💸 HK$50-$100 | Australian Dairy Co. Hong Kong

Australian Dairy Co. is Hong Kong’s most popular cafe. It may not look like much but no one in Hong Kong does eggs better!

This is yet another “cha chaan teng” and has old-school vibes, bustling energy and sometimes cranky staff but I think that adds to the atmosphere and fun!

As the name suggests, this place was named after its high-quality dairy products being imported from Australia!

🔥 Must Try Food:

  • Scrambled Eggs
  • Steamed Milk Pudding
  • Custard
Star Ferry to Central

⏰ 6:30 am – 11:30 pm | 💸 HK$5 pp | Star Ferry

Riding the Star Ferry is not just a way to get between Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island but it’s a quintessential Hong Kong experience.

For over a century, this charming ferry has transported commuters and travellers across Victoria Harbour, offering some of the best skyline views for the lowest price.

Honestly, there are other ways to get between Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island but we caught the Star Ferry every single time. How can you say no to unbeatable views of Hong Kong’s world-famous skyline at a budget-friendly price?

Undeniably, the best times to ride this piece of history are during sunrise and sunset, watching the city light up as the sun creates dreamy pink hues across the sky.

OR, if you want a super unique ferry ride, catch it at 8 pm and watch the Symphony of Lights from the water!

🔥 Pro Tip: Sit on the upper deck for better views and a breezy, relaxing ride!

Okay, now you’ve made your way to Hong Kong Island, it’s time to head to the Central Market.

Afternoon: Exploring Central

Lunch at Tim Ho Wan

⏰ 9 am – 8:30 pm | 💸 HK$100+ | Tim Ho Wan

A little bit about us before we get into this restaurant. We are mid-range budget travellers, we enjoy saving where we can but like to splurge for exciting experiences and avoid hostel dorm rooms where possible.

So you can imagine my joy when I found out that Hong Kong was home to the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant!

At Tim Ho Wan they serve up authentic, award-winning dim sum and I think it’s fair to say that the food will not disappoint.

Note that this place can be tricky to locate as it is kind of wedged in between a shopping mall and a train station.

Indulge in as many delicious foods as your heart desires are we are checking off a bunch of top tourist attractions in Hong Kong!

Central Markets

⏰ 10 am – 10 pm | Central Markets Hong Kong

Once a traditional wet market, Hong Kong Central Market has been transformed into a vibrant cultural and lifestyle hub. The historic building, dating back to 1842, has been restored and now houses a mix of boutique stores, art exhibitions, and trendy cafés.

Here, you can grab a snack or artisanal coffee from one of the many vendors, shop the pop-up stores for a unique souvenir or check out the art exhibitions showcasing local artists.

Mid-Levels Escalators

⏰  6 am – 12 am (uphill from 10 am) | Mid-Level Escalators Hong Kong

It feels odd recommending an escalator as something to do with your time in Hong Kong, but as strange as it may seem the Mid-Levels Escalators aren’t just a quirky attraction – they’re the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world

Spanning 800 meters, this system was built to ease the steep uphill climb through the hilly streets of Central and SoHo.

This record-breaking system offers a unique view of Hong Kong’s bustling streets. With plenty of entry and exit points, you can always stop at one of the many bars, cafes or restaurants that line the route.

Now, this system does span for 800 meters, but we opted to only catch it a few sections up to the next stop for the day.

Victoria Prison (Tai Kwun)

⏰ 10 am – 10 pm | Victoria Prison

Hong Kong’s oldest prison, Victoria Prison has been transformed into Tai Kwun, a cultural complex blending history, art, and entertainment.

The site has been beautifully restored, keeping the original cell blocks, courtyards, and colonial architecture intact.

This unique tourist attraction offers a quiet escape from the city’s vibrant energy.

Here you can step inside a prison cell and experience what life was like for inmates in the 19th and 20th centuries or, check out one of the heritage exhibitions to learn about Hong Kong history.

Our favourite thing to do was to sit back in the open-air courtyard and spend some time people-watching with an afternoon coffee.

Evening: Light Show at TST

Dinner on promenade

Dining along the TST Promenade is an experience in itself. With the harbour breeze, glittering skyscrapers, and bustling atmosphere, it’s the perfect setting for a memorable meal. 🔥 Pro Tip: If you want budget-friendly but delicious food, grab street food from a dai pai dong (open-air food stall)and enjoy it with a view

Symphony of Lights

⏰ 8 pm | Symphony of Lights Hong Kong

After dinner, head to the waterfront to witness the Symphony of Lights, a spectacular multimedia light and sound show that illuminates Hong Kong’s skyline.

The show features laser beams, LED displays, and synchronized music, making it one of the city’s most iconic attractions and it’s FREE!

Being one of the most popular things to do in Hong Kong you’ll want to arrive about 10 minutes beforehand to secure a good spot.

💡 Want a unique experience? Consider taking a harbour cruise during the show for a front-row seat on the water!
